Choose filesHEIC is Apple's container for images encoded with HEVC, the same compression family used for 4K video. It stores roughly the same visual quality as JPEG in about half the space, supports 16-bit colour depth instead of JPEG's 8-bit, and can hold extras like depth maps and Live Photo frames in a single file. Apple made it the default camera format in iOS 11, back in 2017.
The catch is licensing. HEVC is patent-encumbered, which slowed adoption everywhere outside Apple's ecosystem. The result is a format that is technically better than JPEG but that plenty of Windows applications, older Android phones, web upload forms and printing services still refuse to open.
Converting HEIC to JPEG means going from one lossy format to another, so a small amount of quality is lost in the round trip. At 85–90% quality the difference is not visible in normal viewing — the practical loss comes from JPEG's 8-bit colour depth, which can occasionally show faint banding in very smooth gradients like a clear sky at dusk.
Everything happens in your browser here, which matters for photos more than for most files: holiday pictures, documents and family photos never leave your device. Conversion also strips the Apple-specific extras — depth maps and Live Photo motion do not survive into a standard JPEG, though the still image and its EXIF data do.
