Resizing and compressing are not the same thing

Resizing changes how many pixels an image contains. Compressing changes how efficiently those pixels are stored. Both make the file smaller, but they do it in fundamentally different ways, and the difference matters when you are trying to preserve quality.

Resizing is usually the better first move. Removing pixels the viewer was never going to see costs nothing visually, whereas heavy compression damages the pixels that remain. Halving an image's width and height cuts the pixel count to a quarter — and the file size roughly in proportion — with no visible loss if it is still larger than its display size.

Keep the aspect ratio, and never upscale

Setting a single maximum dimension preserves the original proportions automatically: a 4000×3000 photo limited to 1600px becomes 1600×1200. Forcing both width and height independently stretches the image and is almost always a mistake, particularly on photos of people.

Upscaling deserves a specific warning. Enlarging a 500px image to 2000px cannot add detail that was never captured — the software invents pixels by interpolating between existing ones, and the result looks soft and plastic. If you need a larger image, the only real solution is to go back to a higher-resolution original.
